Second year PhD student Matthew Sergeant (currently studying with Dr Bryn Harrison and Prof. Liza Lim) has had an eventful few months as he approaches the ‘midpoint’ of his studies at CeReNeM.
His ensemble work bet giyorgis, written for Amsterdam’s het Nieuw Ensemble as part of the European Composers Professional Development Programme 2011 and premiered at last November’s hcmf//, is now set to be published by University of York Music Press (UYMP). Matthew was also a featured composer at the Royal Northern College of Music’s ‘New Music North-West Festival’ earlier this month (March 5-10) with a performance of his work this was not a film about a drowning man (2008).
Looking ahead, Matthew has just received a grant from the University of Huddersfield’s ‘Research Impact Fund’ to develop a concert (working with his ensemble gaussian) that utilises multimedia technology to amplify otherwise potentially hidden aspects of his own work and that of others – more details coming soon!
* update 18/5/12 Matthew has been awarded a 2012 ‘RNCM Innovation in Teaching and Learning Award’, a prize for his “exceptional work championing online learning within the RNCM Junior Department”.
